THE TILE INSTALLATION PROCESS
To achieve a true estimate the Estimator will address the following details:
The Substrate:
The foundation below where the tile is adhered. Whether on the floor or the wall, the substrate (drywall, plywood, or backer-board) must be sound and/or the surface properly prepared for a strong installation. Any deficiencies such as cracks, thickness, humps, bumps, out of level or proud, will be brought to your attention. Making sure the substrate is viable may increase the budget, but inexpensive when compared to the possibility of tearing out a new installation and turning your home back into a construction site. To avoid this potential setback, we provide a detailed estimate followed up by a verbal explanation, so the work is completed at the standard required to do it right. Our intention is not to inflate the client’s budget by means of over building, our intention is to educate the client on the entire installation process, be extremely organized and ultimately build the installation right the first time around.
The Measurements:
The Estimator will take measurements by the square foot. These critical measurements will enable us to order the correct amount of materials required. Use our measurements so you will know exactly how much tile (+10% extra) to order. The extra tile is to cover tiles wasted for un-square cuts, but may be used elsewhere. Plus, having a few extra tiles is smart just in case a tile needs to be replaced down the road. Finding the same tile after two years is nearly impossible.
The Tile:
Tiles come is various types, sizes and densities. The average ceramic tile is one square foot and is the most common tile installed in the business and prices are based from there.
For example; the average cost of a one square foot ceramic costs approx. $5.00. Tiles larger or smaller than the average sqft tile are more time consuming to cut and to install, thus increasing the price. Because natural stone-tile requires significantly more care and maintenance than a traditional ceramic or porcelain tile, this also increases the price. This is just to give you a basic idea on pricing. Every residential installation is unique and some jobs may be charged on an hourly basis.
The Layout
I can’t emphasis the importance of layout. Not only is it critical for producing an impressive installation, it’s also necessary for estimating the amount of tile required.
The goal of a layout is to explore the various possibilities and choose one that constructs the most appealing installation with the least amount of compromises.
The most cost effective way to lay down a tile is on square. Meaning, all the grout lines flow in the same direction. Then there’s a brick pattern (off-set), a diamond pattern (set on 45 degrees), a diamond with a square border pattern, decorative inserts, or a welcoming feature mat. These patterns are much more time consuming and more expensive to install. Another crucial key to the layout puzzle are the grout lines. Using a wide rather than a thin grout joint will drastically change the look of the installation.
The Tile Supplier:
Before you shop around, consider sketching a rough outline of the area to be tiled. This will give the sales person a place to begin in assisting you in finding the right tile. It may not be the final choice, nonetheless, a good place to start. And if you ask kindly, the salesman may offer samples with no charge. With so many types, sizes, colours, patterns, textures, not to mention, pervious or impervious, interior or exterior tile options, the process could be a little intimidating. If this is the case, we’re more than glad to offer advice on a tile type and pattern, but it’s entirely up to you to choose. To make things easier, Diamond Tile Works has mapped out a list of credible suppliers for your convenience.
TILE REPAIRS
If a tile is stained with mineral deposits, soap scum or dye residue, we have the expert knowledge on what chemicals to apply to efficiently remove the surface contaminators.
Then there’s those loose tile(s) that have been lingering. We can extract it, remove the adhesive, and reapply the same tile(s) in its original place. If a tile is cracked, we can replace it with an original (if you have one available) or a comparable replacement. And of course, find a close matching grout colour.
The highly problematic shower area is a common place where rotten silicon (mildew) may find a home within your personal bathing space. You have probably attempted to clean the silicon with minimum results. This is because the silicon has loosened and moisture has creeped behind, thus creating the perfect environment for mould to thrive. Our skilled technicians can remove all the silicon (all is the essential element) and replace it with a nice new fresh bead of silicon.
Diamond Tile Works receives calls from those who have simply turned a blind eye to an escalating tile situation in the bathroom. It happens all the time, so don’t think you’re the first or feel embarrassed to expose the issue to us. Let’s finally correct the tile deficiencies so your bathroom isn’t held hostage by deficiencies any longer.
Most cases the tile and grout has been compromised resulting in a mold infestation on the substrate situated behind the tile, which is a sign of it rotting out. There are many reasons for this and our Estimator or Installer will inform you with all the usual suspects. Following an inspection, we will bring the sollotion(s) to your attention immediately and figure out a plan to either remove a row of tiles, a wall of tiles or a complete renovation.
CUSTOM MOSAICS
Mosaic art involves detailed placement of small pieces of tile or glass to create a design, which may appear abstract or reflect an actual picture. This four-century old artistry can be used to decorate furniture, floors, walls, countertops and breakfast bars.
Whether you imagine subtle interplays of colour waving through your kitchen backsplash, a company logo as a business greeting feature mat, or perhaps a trendy breakfast bar, Diamond Tile Works proudly works with one of Ontario's most talented mosaic artists. Allow us to translate your creative vision into a mosaic reality.
